August 25, 2009: There were other types of swords as well in the time of the samurai. There was the tachi, similar to the katana and an exquisite weapon reserved for court and ceremonial occasions. (It most likely was a tachi that Hideyoshi Toyotomi actually presented to Tokugawa.) The nodachi, a long, wicked-looking katana carried slung over the warrior’s back, was a massive killing weapon like the two-handed sword hefted by the German landsknecht.

July 8th, 2009: Samurai Sword information: The
wakizashi was even closer to a
samurai’s soul than his
katana. It was with the
wakizashi that the
bushi, or warrior, would take the head of an honored opponent after killing him. It was also with the
wakizashi that a
samurai would ritually disembowel himself in the act of
seppuku, or
hara-kiri, before his second (
kaishaku) took off the
samurai’s head to end the pain. (Suicide was performed by
hara-kiri, or ‘belly-slitting,’ because the Japanese felt that the
hara [intestines] were the seat of the emotions and the soul itself.)

June 29th, 2009: Samurai Swords whose length is next to a different classification type are described with a prefix 'O-' (for great) or 'Ko-' (for small), e.g. a Wakizashi with a length of 59 cm is called a O-wakizashi (almost a Katana) whereas a Katana with 61 cm is called a Ko-Katana (for small Katana) .
Since 1867, restrictions and/or the deconstruction of the samurai class meant that most blades have been worn jindachi-zukuri style, like Western navy officers. Recently (since 1953) there has been a resurgence in the buke-zukuri style, permitted only for demonstration purposes. Swords designed specifically to be tachi are generally kotō rather than shintō, so they are generally better manufactured and more elaborately decorated. However, these are still katana if worn in modern buke-zukuri style.

June 25th, 2009: Did you know that Japanese swords are still commonly seen; antique and modernly-forged swords can easily be found and purchased. Modern, authentic nihontō are made by a few hundred swordsmiths. Many examples can be seen at contests hosted by the All-Japan Swordsmiths Association. The word katana was used in ancient Japan and is still used today, whereas the word nihontō originated in China.

June 12th, 2009: Each blade has a unique profile, mostly dependent on the smith and the construction method. The most prominent is the middle ridge, or shinogi. In the earlier picture, the examples were flat to the shinogi, then tapering to the blade. However, swords could narrow down to the shinogi, then narrow further to the blade, or even expand outward towards the shinogi then shrink to the blade (producing a trapezoidal shape). A flat or narrowing shinogi is called shinogi-hikushi, whereas a fat blade is called a shinogi-takushi.
